What each rank wears

Wearing the uniform isn’t required, but Scouting America encourages it. The neckerchief and cap change with each rank, so those are the pieces families replace most often.

WolfBlue Cub Scout shirtRed
BearBlue Cub Scout shirtLight blue

All ranks wear the navy Cub Scout belt; adventure loops slide onto it. Arrow of Light Scouts may wear the Scouts BSA web belt instead.

Where patches go

Placement for the blue Cub Scout shirt, following Scouting America’s Guide to Awards and Insignia. Patches stay put as your Scout moves up, so it pays to get them right the first time.

Shown from the front, so your Scout’s left sleeve and pocket are on your right.

Right sleeve

  1. 1U.S. flag. At the top of the sleeve. New shirts come with it sewn on.
  2. 2Den number. Directly below the flag, touching it, if your den uses one.
  3. 3Journey to Excellence. The pack’s unit award, 4 inches below the shoulder seam. Wear only the latest one.

Left sleeve

  1. 4Council shoulder emblem. Circle Ten Council, at the top of the sleeve.
  2. 5Pack number 79. Directly below the council emblem, touching it.

Right pocket

  1. 6Name tag. Optional, just above the pocket.
  2. 7Temporary patch. One at a time (a campout or Pinewood Derby patch, for example), centered on the pocket or hung from the button.
  3. 8Recruiter strip. Just below the pocket, for Scouts who bring a friend into Scouting.

Left pocket

  1. 9World Crest. Centered above the pocket, halfway between the shoulder seam and the top of the pocket.
  2. 10Rank badges. On the pocket, in the order your Scout earns them (see below).
Rank badges go in a diamond11st rank22nd33rd44th

Rank badges go in a diamond

The first rank your Scout earns goes at the top, the second on the left, the third on the right and the fourth at the bottom.

A Scout who joined as a Lion wears Lion at the top, Tiger left, Wolf right and Bear at the bottom. A Scout who joined as a Wolf starts with Wolf at the top.

Belt loops and pins

Lions, Tigers, Wolves and Bears earn adventure loops that slide onto the navy belt (Bobcat is now one of these loops, not a pocket badge). Webelos and Arrow of Light Scouts earn adventure pins, worn on the Webelos cap or on the adventure colors.

Adventure colors (Webelos and Arrow of Light)

If the pack uses them, the colors hang from the right sleeve, just below the flag or den number, and the Scout’s adventure pins go on the ribbons.

Neckerchief

Fold the long edge over in flat folds until about 6 inches from the tip, then slide the slide up over both ends. Over or under the collar is the pack’s choice, so ask your den leader.

Arrow of Light Scouts (tan shirt)

  • Council emblem and pack number on the left sleeve, as on the blue shirt.
  • Patrol emblem on the right sleeve, below the flag, in place of a den number.
  • Webelos badge (the oval) centered on the left pocket. It doesn’t go on the blue shirt.
  • Arrow of Light badge below the left pocket, once earned.

Common mix-ups

  • Older diagrams online show a Bobcat badge on the pocket. Bobcat became a belt loop in 2024.
  • The pack number (79) goes on the left sleeve and the den number on the right.
  • The Webelos badge belongs on the tan shirt only.
  • Rank badges must be attached to the shirt itself. Sew them on, or use the no-sew Badge Magic kit sold at Scout Shops; many Scout Shops will also sew patches for a small fee.

Uniform swap

Scouts outgrow shirts quickly, and caps and neckerchiefs change with every rank. Pass yours on, and pick up what you need from other Pack 79 families.

Give

Bring clean shirts, belts, caps, neckerchiefs and handbooks to a pack meeting and hand them to a leader, or post them in our Facebook group.

Get

Tell us what you need and your Scout’s size. We’ll check what families have passed on.

Ask about a size

Before passing a shirt on, take off your Scout’s rank badges. The council emblem and pack number can stay, since the next Scout is in Pack 79 too.

Good to know

Tell the shop “Pack 79, Circle Ten Council”

Staff can then pull the council shoulder patch and the 79 numerals for your Scout’s sleeve.

Check with your den leader first

Each rank has its own neckerchief, slide, and handbook. Your den leader can tell you what this year needs.

Try the uniform swap

Scouts outgrow shirts fast. See the uniform swap below before buying new.

Call before you drive

We last checked these hours in October 2026. Stores change them, especially around holidays.
